About the Area

The district of Waterloo is a part of Central London, as well as part of Lambeth, which is a London borough. It sits just 1 mile or 1.6 kilometres to the east of Charing Cross. Charing Cross is the junction of Cockspur Street, Whitehall and Strand, just to the south of Trafalgar within Central London. Overall, this district belongs to Waterloo Quarter and is a business improvement district. Historically, this area was simply nothing but marshland, at least in the direction of the northern portion of Lambeth, which was an ancient parish. By the 18th century, however, this area was completely drained.

Waterloo is joined with the Strand portion of the River Thames' north bank through Waterloo Bridge. The original bridge was constructed in the area back in 1817; the present-day bridge was opened in 1945. The namesake of this bridge is the Battle of Waterloo from 1815. Waterloo Road, which straddles Southwark and Lambeth, also dates from approximately this time and was constructed on land provided by the Archbishop of Canterbury. It was only after the opening of the Waterloo railway station, back in 1848, that the area was eventually named Waterloo. It sits in the ceremonial county of Greater London.

Places Of Interest

Since this district is part of Central London - one of the busiest areas in all of the city - visitors to the area should expect a whole host of possible attractions to see. If you make your way to the river from this district, you'll soon be able to see the Florence Nightingale Museum, which tells the story of the founder of modern nursing. When you head in the same direction, you'll eventually see the London Eye, which is a big tourist attraction. It's a gigantic Ferris wheel right on the River Thames that offers unmatched views of the entire city - it's definitely worth a look. Other points of interest in the area include the BFI Imax, the London Aquarium and the Southbank Centre, which is an arts centre.

Transport Links

This part of London features very convenient and efficient transportation that you can catch at different locations. If you want to travel by the Tube, which is a reference to the London Underground rail network that's been in operation for 150 years, you can catch this method of transportation in three different locations. You can also take the overland train if you are planning to journey to the south of the country.

Waterloo is a section of Central London that features a great number of interesting things to see that you absolutely can't miss. This is made more significant by the fact that, a few centuries ago, the area itself was actually nothing more than marshland. The entire area has come a long way from just a couple of centuries ago. When in town, you should see memorable attractions such as the London Eye, the Southbank Centre and the Florence Nightingale Museum. Transportation in this area is ideal and easy to use.
