About the Area

Marylebone is a very wealthy, inner-city section of central London. It's situated in the City of Westminster, which itself is a London borough that takes up much of London's central area. Sometimes, this inner-city area of London is referred to as St. Marylebone. Generally speaking, it is bounded by Great Portland Street to the east, Edgeware Road to the west, Marylebone Road to the north and Oxford Street to the south. Since this area is wealthy, it is today home to a lot of dental and medical offices, most of which can be found on Harley Street - a street recognized for its great concentration of medical practitioners.

About the Area

The area first received its name from a church that was devoted to St. Mary; St. Marylebone Parish Church now bears this title. By the 18th century, this area of central London had a reputation for the entertainment offered at Marylebone Gardens, a place for prize fighting and bear-baiting. In more modern times, this section of central London has a Beatles connection. A flat belonging to the late John Lennon can be seen at 34 Montagu Square. As far as the London Assembly goes, the area belongs to West Central, but in the 1980s, it was previously a part of the St. Marylebone UK parliament constituency.
