Fitzrovia is a diverse neighbourhood located in central London, nestled between Marylebone, Soho and Bloomsbury. It is home to small media companies, a number of pubs, restaurants, cafés and a selection of hotels. Fitzrovia is also well known for its art galleries and artist community, which dates back to the 1700s. Many famous painters and writers lived in this area, including painters Richard Wilson and Walter Sickert, and writers George Bernard Shaw and Virginia Woolfe. Many musicians also made their debuts in Fitzrovia, such as Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan. This neighbourhood is particularly well known for its music venues, public houses and nightclubs where the community's artists congregate. In addition to its reputation as an artist's hub, this neighbourhood is also renowned for being home to a number of big names in the architecture and design, fashion, photography, advertising and television production industries. Despite its west-end location, and the fact that it's home to a wide range of businesses, Fitzrovia is a laid-back community that doesn't have the same hustle and bustle of other west-end neighbourhoods. Places of Interest
The most prominent street for shopping in Fitzrovia is Tottenham Court Road, which is also home to the Dominion Theatre and a wide variety of cafés, restaurants and pubs. Although you'll discover a number of upscale shops and eateries, you'll also find many more affordable options. In recent years, Fitzrovia has become known for its art galleries. On the last Thursday of every month, you can check out more than 40 galleries during Fitzrovia Lates, an event in which the galleries stay open late and offer tours, talks and performances. Beyond the first-rate galleries, however, there are also many other sites to see in Fitzrovia, such as Pollock's Toy Museum, Grant Museum of Zoology, All Souls Church, the BBC Broadcasting House and so much more. When you're finished exploring the charming streets of this neighbourhood, there are plenty of peaceful spots to sit and watch the world go by, such as Fitzroy Square. Regent's Park is also located nearby, where you can relax and enjoy the breath-taking scenery and unwind after a day of exploring.
Transportation in Fitzrovia is relatively easy, with excellent access to a variety of transport links. You can travel around the neighbourhood and take in all the sights and sounds quite easily by foot, but if you need to travel further, you'll find plenty of bus and train stations throughout the area. Euston Station is the closest railway station, and a number of tube stations are also nearby, such as Goodge Street, Warren Street, Great Portland Street, Euston Square and Tottenham Court Road. A variety of major motorways are also within easy reach, and Heathrow Airport is a 50-minute drive away. Many of the areas hotels offer express service to the airport, and you can also find express train service to both the Gatwick and Heathrow Airports from Victoria and Paddington mainline stations.
