About the Area

Ealing is an area just to the west of the city of London, and it's also the administrative centre belonging to the London Borough of Ealing. It sits about 8 miles west of Charing Cross, which is the junction of Cockspur Street, Whitehall and Strand. According to the London Plan, the spatial development strategy for the city of London that was composed by the Mayor of London, it is one of the main metropolitan centres. Historically, this area became a municipal borough in 1901; it's been part of Greater London since 1965. Today, it comprises an important retail and commercial centre that features a developed night-time economy.

About the Area

Ealing is best known for the many film studios that dot its landscape. They are the oldest in the world and famed for producing "Ealing comedies" such as The Lavender Hill Mob, The Ladykillers, Passport to Pimlico and Kind Hearts and Coronets. In 1955, these studios were taken over by the BBC. There are more than 15 churches in this area: They include a Polish Roman Catholic church named Our Lady Mother of the Church, inside of The Mall. There are also two synagogues in the area. Several festivals take place here year round. They are the Beer Festival, the Comedy Festival, the Blues Festival, the Opera in the Park, the Jazz Festival and the Global Festival.

Places of Interest

If you're a Rolling Stones fan, you might want to check out the Ealing Jazz Club because it was where, back in 1962, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger first met Brian Jones. Today, this jazz club has been renamed the The Red Room, and it is a nightclub. If you're a sports fan, you might like to see the Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club play. The area is also home to the Ealing Cricket Club, which is a highly successful cricket team in the country. It has been the best club in the city for at least a number of years already.

Transport Links

Since this area's quite important, there is an abundance of transport links that serve it. Ealing is served by the Ealing Broadway station on both the London Underground and Great Western Main Line. Three tube stations also serve it: Ealing Common, South Ealing and North Ealing. The District line operates at Common and Broadway, the Central line at Broadway, and the Piccadilly line at Common, North and South. There is absolutely no shortage of transportation in this area.

This London borough is one of the major metropolitan centres within the London Plan. It has a rich history that includes the jazz club where some members of the Rolling Stones met one another. Throughout the 20th century, this area has only gotten increasingly populated, growth which can be attributed to its place as a budding and important location within London. There's a lot to do in this borough, too, especially if you're a sports fan. Both rugby and cricket are highly popular. Public transit is very well planned in this area as well.
