About the Area

The street itself was constructed by a syndicate of developers that was spearheaded by Sir Thomas Bond. After buying a mansion referred to as Clarendon House, the syndicate tore it down and began development of this area in the late 17th century. A few centuries ago, the noted Victorian actress Anne Lister enjoyed staying at 26 Dover Street. In the late 18 century, John Nash, the noted architect, moved into a building that he designed himself at 28 Dover Street. He constructed an even larger structure next door at 29 Dover Street. Today, the street is home to a large number of clubs, such as the Bath Club and the Capisce Club at 1 Dover Street.
