About the Area

Blackfriars is best known as an area of central London, sitting in London's southwest corner. Historically, the name of this area was first utilized in the 14th century and originated from the black cappa that the Dominican Friars used to wear. The area today is probably best known as serving as the location for Blackfriars tube station, which is the central London railway terminal, as well as the London Underground complex. The more aged parts of this area have been employed as backdrops for both modern serials and movies that have been set in Victorian times. Today, it's an area that's home to a number of financial and investment companies.

Landmarks and Buildings to See

The Blackfriars area is very historic and is still an important financial and investment hub within London. As such, it's near various landmarks that you absolutely can't miss if you're lucky enough to visit this part of the city. One of the most prominent landmarks has to be the Millennium Bridge. It serves as a link between the holy St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tate Modern. Engineer Ove Arup and sculptor Anthony Caro were the minds behind this landmark. Of course, the aforementioned St. Paul's Cathedral is also worth your time. The famous Sir Christopher Wren was the brainchild of the present-day Cathedral, which is the 4th one to occupy this site.

Blackfriars is Home to Great Theatres

If you're a fan of theatre and Shakespeare, then you can't possibly pass up a chance to get yourself to the Globe...Shakespeare's Globe, that is. Near Blackfriars, it's a building that was the brainchild of American actor Sam Wanamaker and is completely devoted to the works of Shakespeare, as well as the different venues for which they were made. Another venue you can't miss is the Bridewell Theatre, which is just off Fleet Street. It can seat just 150 people, but it's the Tower Theatre Company that you really want to pay attention to. This performing, non-professional acting troupe is based in this theatre.

Check Out The Art Gallery

As mentioned above, the Tate Modern is linked to holy St. Paul's Cathedral by the Millennium Bridge. The Tate Modern is the gallery to see when you're visiting Blackfriars because it's nothing like you could expect. It is the national museum of modern art of Britain. The building is home to a plethora of works of modern art, many of which belong to renowned masters such as Picasso, Bacon and Dali. The best part about this place could very well be the fact that admission is free!

Blackfriars is a highly worthy area of central London to both visit and explore. It is close to a lot of the must-see sights and landmarks of modern-day London. It features great transportation links that can also get you to and from attractions in an efficient period of time. Whether you're in this part of the city for either pleasure or business, be sure to take some time out to see the sights listed above.
